CARSON, Calif. – Syracuse junior forward Kyle Hall (Toronto, Ontario) is hoping to help the Canadian U-23 National Team into the semifinals of the CONCACAF Men’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament on Sunday, March 16. Canada faces a must-win situation against Guatemala today at the Home Depot Center.
Hall, who tied for second on the Orange with four goals in 2007, was picked to the roster for the tournament on March 11. He appeared in Canada’s first two matches of the tournament, a 1-1 draw against Mexico on March 12 and a 2-1 loss to Haiti on March 14.
Should Canada defeat Guatemala Sunday, it has the chance to be one of two teams from Group B to secure a spot in the tournament semifinals held in Nashville, Tenn. Winning won’t be enough though. In addition to a victory, Canada needs a win by Mexico (with fewer goals scored than Canada on the final day) or a draw by Haiti (with fewer goals than Canada) to advance.
A spot in the semis is crucial because the two semifinal winners automatically qualify for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
Three of the four semifinal spots have already been decided. The United States and Honduras will represent Group A, while Guatemala is assured of a berth from Group B.
