NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Syracuse junior forward Kyle Hall (Toronto, Ontario) scored in the final round of penalty kicks to lift the Canadian U-23 National Team to a third-place finish in the CONCACAF Olympic Qualification Tournament Sunday, March 23 at LP Field. Hall’s kick sealed the match for Canada as it defeated Guatemala, 5-3, in a shootout.
After 90 minutes of scoreless soccer, both teams scored in the first round of penalty kicks. In the second round, Canada goalie David Monslave made the only save of the shootout on Guatemala’s Jairo Arreola to give the Canucks the advantage. Canada quickly took a 2-1 lead, converting its second kick.
Both teams scored on their third and fourth kicks to make it 4-3 Canada heading into the final round. That set the stage for Hall, who drilled the Canucks’ final PK under the crossbar to clinch third place, Canada’s best finish at the event since 1996.
Hall played a critical role in Canada’s success in the tournament. He appeared in all five matches and scored the deciding goal in Canada’s first game with Guatemala to propel the team into the semifinals against the United States.
Canada just missed out on a berth in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Only the top two teams, the United States which defeated Canada in the semifinals, and Honduras qualified.
