The Orange men’s soccer team hosted a group of students from the Central Village Boys and Girls Club recently at Manley Field House as part of the ‘Cuse Cares Community Service Program. The team spent time teaching the kids various soccer skills and then spoke to the group about the importance of getting an education and their experiences as student-athletes.
The team showed the kids basic soccer skills like dribbling, shooting, and juggling through a variety of different games and drills. Afterwards, they answered questions from the group for about 30 minutes. Forward Pete Rowley (Reading, Pa.) said the team tried to create a bond with the kids by introducing themselves and sharing facts about their lives such as where they were from.
Some of the topics included guiding the students through a typical day as a student-athlete, the importance of time management and educating the kids about specific majors and areas of study.
Rowley believes both the students and the team benefited from the session.
“We get so caught up in the stress of our lives,” Rowely said. “It’s nice to sit back and see how they approach things. It gives you a fresh perspective on soccer and your personal life. It’s also great to help out the kids and hopefully make their day a little more enjoyable."
