SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior shortstop Jamie Kelling registered four hits in the Orange's doubleheader against Buffalo on Wednesday at the SU Softball Stadium at SkyTop. Kelling was a perfect 3-for-3 in SU's 13-5 six-inning loss during game one and went 1-for-3 in the 7-2 defeat in the second outing. She leads the team with 16 multi-hit games.
Kelling crossed home plate a team-best three times during the day and leads the team this season with 26 runs scored. The junior also tallied her fifth double of the season.
Freshman third baseman Hallie Gibbs registered her sixth home run of the season and is now in sole possession of the third spot on the school's freshman record list for home runs. She trail Jennifer Orpitelli (seven) and Alex Switenko (nine). Gibbs, who drove in a team-high four runs on the day, is second on the team with 26 RBI.
The Orange (20-28) jumped out to an early lead in game two with an RBI single up the middle by Gibbs to score Kelling, who led off the inning with an infield single.
After a two-run shot in the top of the second by Buffalo senior Lacy Scheider, SU tied the game, 2-2, in the bottom half of the inning when junior first baseman Nicole Miller and junior second baseman Lindsey Wasek attempted a double steal. Miller was out at second, but Wasek crossed home. The two positioned themselves with a leadoff double by Wasek – her second of the day – and a single over the shortstop's head by Miller.
The Bulls' put on a double steal of their own in the top of the third that allowed senior Mary Russell to take second and sophomore Kristen Gallipani to score.
Insurance runs in the top of the fifth (one) and sixth (three) innings for the Bulls produced the final result.
Sophomore pitcher Brittany Gardner pitched 7.0 innings, striking out one and allowing four earned runs. She is 12-9 this season, while Buffalo sophomore Sharon Barr went the distance to improve to 3-12.
During game one, Gibbs sent a 2-0 pitch deep over the left-center field fence to give SU a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.
Kelling, who reached on an infield single and then stole second, scored on Gibbs’ long ball. She is a perfect 8-for-8 when stealing.
The Bulls (7-31) erupted for six runs in the top of the third inning, which featured a triple by freshman Lindsey Hampton, a double by junior Ashley Kanavy and a two run home run by Gallipani.
Syracuse answered in the bottom half of the inning with a double by senior pitcher/outfielder Chanel Roehner to score sophomore Ev Anderson and Kelling. Anderson reached with an infield single and Kelling doubled to deep right. Roehner scored two at-bats later when Gibbs grounded to second.
Buffalo added two runs in the fourth, four in the fifth and one in the second to come away with the six-inning victory.
Sophomore Katie Ivancich earned the victory, going 6.0 innings and allowing four earned runs. She is now 3-11.
The Orange used three pitchers with Roehner pitching the first 3.0 innings, striking out three. She was credited with the loss and is 8-11. Sophomore Angie Sagnelli added 1.1 innings in relief and Gardner threw 1.2, striking out one.
The Orange puts the finishing touches on the regular season when it hosts 20/rv DePaul on Friday, May 2 for a 5:30 p.m. and Notre Dame on Sunday, May 4 at 11 a.m. – both outings are doubleheaders.
