Orange Battles Blue Demons In Conference Doubleheader

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior designated player Amy Kelley came through in the bottom of the sixth with an RBI single to right field to score sophomore leftfielder Ev Anderson to snap 20/rv DePaul's shutout during game two of Friday's conference doubleheader at the SU Softball stadium. The Blue Demons came away with a 9-0 five inning win in game one and a 5-1 victory in game two. The Orange, which has already clinched a spot in the 2008 BIG EAST Championship, goes to 20-30 overall and 11-9 in the conference, while the Demons improve to 44-15 and 16-15.
Sophomore pitcher Brittany Gardner pitched her team-high 15th complete game of the season and struck out five batters during the second game. DePaul, which earlier this week knocked off the No. 1 and No. 11 teams in the country, produced 14 hits in the first game, but only six in the second.
During the late game, junior shortstop Jamie Kelling paced the Orange by going 2-for-3, but it was hits by Anderson and Kelley that put SU on the board.
In the bottom of the sixth, Anderson led off with a hard hit single to third and then stole second. The stolen base was her third of the season. Kelley followed to at-bats later with her hit to shallow right at deflected off of Shea Warren's glove and allowed Kelley to advance to third.
Game one was dominated by DePaul's ace and reigning National Player of the Week, Becca Heteniak. The sophomore threw her second no-hitter nine days, striking out eight. She followed with an 11 strikeout performance during game two. She is now 27-6 this season.
Senior Chanel Roehner was credited with the loss in game one and goes to 8-12. Freshman Angie Sagnelli provided 1.2 innings of relief and only allowed two hits.
The Orange finishes the regular season on Sunday when the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame come to the SU Softball Stadium for an 11 a.m. doubleheader. Free Johnny's pizza will be given to all SU students who show SUID at the game.
