SAN DIEGO – The Syracuse men’s crew team won the Men’s Collegiate Varsity International Petite today at the San Diego Crew Classic. The varsity eight boat of Jamie Hubbell (coxswain), Ryan Armstrong (stroke), Ryan Patton (7-seat), Martin Etem (6-seat), Brian Azeff (5-seat), Tyson Bry (4-seat), Mike Bagnall (3-seat), John Combs (2-seat) and Dan Lombardi (bow) finished the 2,000-meter course with a time of 5:53.80. The Orange was three seconds better than OSU and seven seconds faster than Penn, Purdue, UCSD and Colgate.
“We were scrambled off the start, but we did a good job of getting the same speed and effective rhythm we had yesterday,” head coach Dave Reischman said. “We were aggressive down the race course and stayed composed throughout the race.
“Our expectation this weekend was to establish we were going to race hard. We did that, but we were disappointed that we were not in the grand finale. That will be a motivating force for us the rest of the regular season.”
SU is back on the water Saturday, April 12 at the George Washington Invitational. The Orange will be competing for the Ten Eyck Cup against Rutgers.
