SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Ten home matches highlight Syracuse’s 2008 men’s soccer schedule, which was released by Orange head coach Dean Foti on Thursday, June 5. The Orange will kick off the season with consecutive home non-conference games against Canisius (Aug. 29) and Colgate (Sept. 1).
The Orange will play 18 total matches this season, including 11 BIG EAST games. Seven contests are against teams that advanced to last year’s NCAA Tournament. In addition to its match with NCAA qualifier Colgate, the Orange will face six BIG EAST teams that reached last season’s championship (Louisville, DePaul, Notre Dame, Connecticut, USF and Providence).
Syracuse will also take part in the annual Mayor’s Cup in Oneonta on Sept. 5 and Sept. 7. This is the second straight year Foti’s club will compete in the event. SU will face UNC-Wilmington in its opening match and Florida Gulf Coast in its second game.
A home date with Monmouth (Sept. 11) is SU’s final tune-up for BIG EAST Conference action, which begins with a weekend trip to the Midwest for matches against Marquette on Sept. 19 and Notre Dame on Sept. 21. The following weekend, the Orange wraps up the month of September by hosting Providence (Sept. 26) and Connecticut (Sept. 28) in its first home league contests of year.
October begins with road matches at USF (Oct. 3) and St. John’s (Oct. 8) followed by the team’s longest homestand of 2008. Syracuse will play three straight home dates beginning with Rutgers on Oct. 11. SU hosts will then host DePaul (Oct. 18) before concluding its non-league slate at home versus Adelphi (Oct. 21).
The Orange will round out the season with three straight conference games, traveling to Cincinnati (Oct. 25) and Villanova (Oct. 29) before concluding the regular year at home with a match against Louisville on Nov. 1.
The 2008 BIG EAST Championship will get underway with first-round games at campus sites on Nov. 5. The top six teams in the Red and Blue Divisions will make up the tournament field. The conference semifinals and championship matches will be played at USF’s Soccer/Track Stadium on Nov. 14 and Nov. 16.
