CAMDEN, N.J. – After the first day of competition at the 2008 IRA Regatta, the Syracuse men’s rowing team has one boat in contention for grand finals. The Orange took third place in the opening heat of the freshman eight race and first in its repachage heat, pushing SU into the semifinals.
In the varsity eight race, the 13th-ranked Syracuse came in fifth place with a time of 6:03.927. Top-seeded Washington won the race with a time of 5:53.296 and eighth-seeded Stanford placed second with a time of 5:55.185. Ninth-seeded Columbia finished third at 5:58.429 and Georgetown crossed the line fourth with a time of 6:01.607. The Orange then competed in the repachage heat two and came in second place with a time of 6:06.021, just behind Princeton (6:01.623).
Syracuse advances to the third semifinal, which will take place at 12:24 p.m. on Friday. Syracuse faces Colgate, Georgetown, Oregon State, Dartmouth and Holy Cross. The top three boats in that semifinal advance to the third level final with the top three boats from the fourth semifinal.
In the second varsity eight race, the 10th-seeded Orange placed fourth in its heat with a time of 6:11.915. Second-seeded Washington (5:59.406), seventh-seeded Northeastern (6:03.666) and Georgetown (6:07.824) finished in front of Syracuse. In the fourth repachage heat, the Orange placed second, coming in at 6:09.513. Harvard won the race at 6:05.200. SU will face Columbia, Georgetown and Yale in the fourth semifinal on Friday at 11:48 a.m. The top three boats in that semifinal advance to the third level final, while place four does not advance.

Top-seeded Washington (5:56.162) and eighth-seeded Stanford (6:01.517) ahead of Syracuse. In the third repachage heat, the Orange placed first, coming in at 6:04.342. SU will face Princeton, California, Washington, Wisconsin and Navy in the first semifinal on Friday at 1 p.m. The top three boats in that semifinal advance to Grand Final and places four-six compete in to Petite Final.
In the freshman four race, Syracuse posted a time of 6:09.013 in the time trial slotting the Orange in the fourth semifinal on Friday at 9:24 a.m. SU will battle Minnesota, Delaware and Holy Cross. The top three boats in that semifinal advance to the third level final, while place four does not advance.
