Field Hockey Season Beings Sunday

COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. – The 18th-ranked Syracuse field hockey team begins its 36th season of competition this Sunday, August 31. The Orange takes on No. 8 Old Dominion at 1 p.m. in Collegeville, Pa. SU is 21-15 (.583) in season-opening contests. SU is 1-0 in season openers under current head coach Ange Bradley. Sunday’s contest marks the sixth consecutive season Syracuse has started its season on the road.

This is only the second game between the two universities. ODU defeated SU, 3-1, on September 12, 2004. That game was also contested at a neutral site (Ann Arbor, Mich.).

2007 BIG EAST Coach of the Year and second-year head coach Ange Bradley and the 2008 field hockey team were selected to finish second in the BIG EAST Preseason Coaches’ Poll. Bradley welcomes back the 2006 Atlantic-10 Player of the Year, senior Shannon Taylor, and sophomore Maggie Befort who was named a 2008 Preseason All-BIG EAST selection

ODU, winners of 13 Colonial Athletic Association titles since 1991, was picked to finish second in the poll by the league’s nine head coaches. ODU returns seven starters from last year’s squad that went 12-10 overall and was a perfect 8-0 in CAA play. The Lady Monarchs extended their streak of consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances to 27. ODU welcomes back a pair of First Team All-CAA performers in senior goalkeeper Kelly Driscoll and senior back Katelyn Smither. Providing the offense will be juniors Katie Ueberroth and Kat Shea, who each scored nine goals a year ago, and sophomore Loren Hatch, who was the CAA Rookie of the Year. The Lady Monarchs open the 2008 season against Penn State on Saturday, August 30 before playing the Orange on Sunday
