SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse junior Eliza Bennett-Hattan recorded four saves and posted her second shutout of the season in the Orange's 2-0 win against Colgate on Sunday, Sept. 14 at the SU Soccer Stadium. The shutout was the 14th of Bennett-Hattan’s career and moves her into a tie for first place on Syracuse’s career shutouts leader list with Shannon Myers (2001-04).
The win improves the Orange’s record to 2-3-1, while Colgate goes to 1-6.
Senior Karrah Benson set up Syracuse’s first score when she put a high arcing shot into the box. Sophomore Megan Bellingham took the ball in the air and headed it past Raiders’ goalkeeper Rebecca Michlin in the 11th minute. It was Bellingham’s team-leading fifth goal of the season, while Benson was credited with her first career assist.
A flurry of action in front of the goal resulted in the Orange’s second goal. Chelsea Berry took the ball on the right side and passed it to Amy Ware. Ware’s shot was blocked by a Colgate defender and ricocheted to Tessa MacDougall who found the back of the net for her first goal of the season at the 55:05 mark.
“Today we were more organized both on attack and defense,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “We created more chances and we took advantage of those chances. There was more effort, passion, commitment and determination from all of our players. That is something we really stressed this week to the players.”
The Orange outshot Colgate, 10-6, and had five corner kicks.
In addition to tying the school record for career shutouts, Bennett-Hattan moved into a tie for second place on SU’s record list for career saves. She has 196 stops in her career, tying Katie Karlander (1999-00) on Syracuse’s all-time ledger.
Syracuse’s four-game home stand continues on Friday when it opens BIG EAST play against St. John’s at 6 p.m. at the SU Soccer Stadium.
