SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Syracuse junior goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hattan is now the sole record holder in career shutouts in Syracuse women’s soccer history after a double overtime 0-0 tie against BIG EAST foe St. John’s on Friday, Sept. 19 at the SU Soccer Stadium. It was the BIG EAST opener for both teams.
Bennett-Hattan tallied her 15th career shutout, which moved her past Shannon Myers (2001-04) in the SU record books. It was Bennett-Hattan’s third shutout of the season. Her four saves against the Red Storm pushed her career total to 200, giving her sole possession of second place in career saves. Bennett-Hattan joins Myers as the only goalkeepers in the history of the program to record 200 career saves. Myers holds the school record with 254 career saves.
Regulation play ended in a virtual stalemate, as the action went back and forth, with both teams exchanging shots on goal. Syracuse (2-3-2, 0-0-1) tallied 11 shots in regulation to the Red Storm’s (4-1-2, 0-0-1) nine.
The overtime periods provided much of the same, as neither team could put the ball past the keeper during the two 10-minute periods. The best scoring opportunity came amidst a flurry in front of the goal when Orange sophomore Megan Bellingham’s shot went off the hands of St. John’s goalkeeper Kristin Russell after an SU corner kick during the first overtime period.
“It was our first BIG EAST game so the pressure was on,” said Syracuse head coach Phil Wheddon. “Our team came out and played well against a team that beat us last year. We are creating scoring opportunities. Now we just have to finish those opportunities.”
Syracuse returns to the SU Soccer Stadium on Sunday to take on the Binghamton Bearcats at 1 p.m. in its final non-conference game of the season. Conference play resumes next Thursday when Pittsburgh comes to town to take on the Orange in a 7 p.m. game.
