Maggie Befort’s Defense Earns Her Weekly Field Hockey Accolades

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -Syracuse sophomore back Maggie Befort was named the BIG EAST field hockey Defensive Player of the Week after leading Syracuse to a 2-0 week, highlighted by a 2-1 win against No. 1 Maryland at the Terrapin Invitational. Freshman midfielder Martina Loncarica earned Honor Roll accolades after recording four points off one goal and two assists in SU’s two games.
Befort is the third consecutive Orange player to earn Player of the Week honors. Freshman back Anne-Sophie Van der Post earned Defensive Player of the Week praise on September 1 and senior midfielder Shannon Taylor earned Offensive Player of the Week accolades on September 9.
Freshman forward Lindsey Conrad (September 1) and senior goalkeeper Heather Hess (September 9) have also been honored as members of the weekly BIG EAST Honor Roll.
Befort spearheaded a Syracuse defense that allowed only two goals in its wins at No. 1 Maryland (2-1) on Sept. 13 and against Delaware (5-1) on Sept. 14. The sophomore also recorded a team-best five points (2g, 1a) in the two games. Befort tallied the game-winning goal versus Maryland with less than eight minutes to go when she deflected Loncarica shot off a Syracuse corner. Befort tallied an assist on Syracuse’s third goal and scored the fifth against Delaware. Befort now has 10 points on three goals and four assists.
After a scoreless first half at in Syracuse’s 2-1 win at No. 1 Maryland, Loncarica notched the game’s first goal at 42:59. It was her fifth goal of the season. The freshman took a big swipe at the ball from inside the scoring circle, sending the shot sailing to the back of the cage. It was the first time this season the Terps had trailed in a game. Loncarica also provided the assist on the game-winning goal. The freshman registered another assist in SU’s 5-1 win against Delaware. She now leads the team with 17 points and seven assists.
The seventh-ranked Syracuse Orange opens BIG EAST play at home against No. 13 Louisville on Friday at 2 p.m. at J.S. Coyne Stadium. Orange All Access will provide live video and audio and live stats will be available on SUathletics.com.
