SYRACUSE, N.Y. – After returning to the field almost two weeks ago, the 2008-09 Syracuse University softball team is gearing up for its first action of the year when it travels to Binghamton this weekend for the BAGSAI 2008 Fall College Classic. Action begins Saturday at 10 a.m.
“The team has been working very hard for the first two weeks of practice,” head coach Leigh Ross said. “This weekend will give us a chance to put some of the things we learned to the test.”
There will be 11 teams in attendance at this year’s classic. Joining the Orange will be host Binghamton, Cornell, Colgate, St. Rose, Lemoyne, Mansfield, Caldwell, Albany, Fordham and Rutgers. Syracuse will face Albany at noon and Fordham at 2 p.m. on Saturday, and will face Cornell at 10 a.m. and Lemoyne at noon on Sunday.
“It's a lot of fun for the girls to be able to get on the field without the pressure of being in our regular season,” Ross said. “It gives the coaching staff the opportunity to get an early glance of where we are as a team and a better idea of our strengths and weaknesses. Our eight new players will get their first chance to enjoy collegiate competition and gain some valuable experience.”
In addition to the eight new players joining this year’s squad, the Orange return more than 10 players from last year’s squad. Ross and associate head coach Kyle Jamieson are joined by second-year graduate assistant coach Abby Habicht and new assistant coach Wally King.
