Between Friday and Sunday, four Syracuse teams were in action and turned out a 6-1-1 record. The No. 3 field hockey team earned two shutout wins against No. 11 Louisville and New Hampshire. The team improves to 8-0 on the season, the best start in the program’s 37 year history. Men’s soccer grabbed its fifth shutout in six games with a victory in its BIG EAST opener. The volleyball team went 2-0 at the Colgate Invitational with a 3-0 win against Princeton and a 3-1 victory against host Colgate. Women’s soccer also opened its BIG EAST schedule with a 0-0 tie with St. John’s. The team would go on to earn a 2-0 shutout against Binghamton on Sunday.
With the 3-0 blanking of No. 11 Louisville on Friday, the No. 3 Orange improved to 7-0 overall for the first time in the program’s 37 year history. In the matchup, senior Shannon Taylor scored her team-leading seventh goal of the season. On Sunday, the Orange welcomed New Hampshire to Coyne Field. Taylor and freshman Martina Loncarica both contributed hat-tricks in the 10-0 victory. Also scoring goals for the Orange were sophomore Lena Voelmle, senior Brittany Shannon, freshman Mariana Vernet and junior Tracy Deitrick. The Orange outshot the Wildcats, 30-9, and had a 7-5 advantage in penalty corners.

On Friday, the men’s soccer team posted its fifth shutout in six games when it earned a 1-0 victory against Marquette. This is the second-consecutive year the Orange has won its league opener. Senior Spencer Schomaker scored the game-winning goal. On Sunday, despite a 3-0 loss to No. 3 Notre Dame, senior keeper Robert Cavicchia moved into third place on the career saves list with 248. Notre Dame is the highest ranked team the Orange has faced since 2002 when it met third-ranked St. John’s.

The Orange volleyball swept the Colgate Invitational on Saturday, posting a 3-0 win against Princeton and a 3-1 victory against Colgate. Leading the Orange in kills was junior Sarah Morton who tallied 14 kills in the Princeton match and 12 against Colgate. She also earned a .524 attack percentage in both matches. Sophomore Hayley Todd grabbed three career-highs in the match against Colgate. Todd had 11 kills on 24 attacks, while contributing eight block assists. Senior April Quigley registered a total of 67 assists at the invite, and junior Kacie MacTavish recorded 14 kills.

In the BIG EAST opener for both teams on Friday, Syracuse and St. John’s finished in a 0-0 double overtime tie. Junior keeper Eliza Bennett-Hatton became the sole record holder in career shutouts with 15. On Sunday, the Orange faced nearby Binghamton and came out with a 2-0 win to remain undefeated at home so far this season. Sophomore Megan Bellingham tallied her team-leading sixth goal of the season, while junior Tessa MacDougall registered her second goal of the season. At the end of the match, the Orange had put up 17 shots to Binghamton’s one.

Cross Country has had the past week off from competition, but the team has begun preparing for the four meets scheduled for October. Up first for the team is a trip to Bethlehem, Pa. for the Paul Short Invitational on October 3. Following the meet, the team will travel to State College, Pa. to take part in the National Open on October 17.
