Orange Continues Undefeated Season

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The second-ranked Syracuse field hockey team defeated the Providence College Friars, 4-2, in BIG EAST Conference action at Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. on Friday, September 26. Four different players scored for the Orange, while senior goalkeeper Heather Hess (Lititz, Pa.) registered three saves. Syracuse improves to 9-0 overall and 2-0 in the BIG EAST. Providence moves to 5-4 overall and 0-2 in the league.
Syracuse hopped on the scoreboard first just 11:22 into the contest as freshman back Anne-Sophie Van der Post (Amsterdam, Netherlands) connected on her third goal of the season off an option on a penalty corner. Senior midfielder Shannon Taylor (Midlothian, Va.) was credited with the assist. Providence tied the score, 1-1, as Nellie Poulin notched her fourth goal of the year at the 31:11 mark as she was fed a pass from sophomore Jamie Lipski on a give and go.
The Orange broke the Friars' momentum in the closing seconds of the first half. Syracuse was awarded a penalty corner with 28 seconds remaining on the clock. Van der Post took an initial shot during the corner, which was saved by Rachel Chamberlain. Sophomore forward Lindsey Conrad (Wilkes-Barre, Pa.) collected the rebound off the pads and slipped it into the back of the cage with two seconds remaining for a 2-1 lead.
The Friars would answer to tie the game, 2-2, just 3:53 into the second half as Poulin scored on a deflection off an initial shot taken by Julie Ruggieri. Ruggieri was credited with the assist.
Syracuse then closed the game with two unanswered goals at 40:34 and 52:21 to earn the 4-2 victory. Freshman midfielder Martina Loncarica (Buenos Aires, Argentina) and sophomore back Maggie Befort (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) were credited with the assists on the play.
The Orange held a 15-6 advantage in shots during the game, which included an 11-2 edge in the first 35 minutes of play. Each team recorded just four shots in the second half. Syracuse also held a 12-5 advantage in penalty corners.
Syracuse will return to action on Sunday, September 28 at Massachusetts at 1 p.m.
