NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. – Syracuse sophomore Megan Bellingham scored two goals but a late Niagara goal gave the Purple Eagles a 3-2 victory against the Orange on Sunday, Sept. 7. It marks the first time Bellingham has scored twice in a game in her career. She now leads the team in scoring with four goals this season.
Niagara (3-1-0) scored the only goal of the first half in the 36th minute when Stephanie Gartley found the back of the net off a pass from Jennifer Kimoto. The Orange (1-3-1) tied the score at the 53:04 mark when Bellingham headed the ball past Niagara goalkeeper Ashleigh Bowers off a cross from Chelsea Berry. For Berry, it was her second assist of the season. Bellingham then gave Syracuse a 2-1 lead in the 59th minute when she netted her second goal of the day on a free kick. The Orange held the advantage until Niagara’s Kathryn Potter scored her first goal of the season to tie the score in the 71st minute. The Purple Eagles took the lead for good on Gartley’s second goal of the day on an assist from Shaylyn Lawrence at the 84:15 mark for the 3-2 final.
Both teams recorded 14 shots, while Niagara had four corner kicks to two for the Orange. Syracuse goalkeeper Eliza Bennett-Hattan played the first half, while junior Sami Hirsh was in goal for the Orange in the second half in her first action of the 2008 campaign. She recorded two saves. Bowers finished with two saves for Niagara.
