SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse powerplay unit erupted against Robert Morris on Saturday afternoon, scoring two goals on five extra-man opportunities, marking the first time SU's scored two powerplay tallies since the Orange took on Wayne State on November 21. Syracuse and Robert Morris duked it out to a 2-2 overtime draw, which is the first tie and overtime affair for the Orange, 17 games into its inaugural season.
Freshman winger Janelle Malcolm (Edmonton, Alberta) scored the go-ahead goal for Syracuse late in the first period in addition to an assist on SU's first goal a few minutes prior. It is the second time Malcolm has recorded one goal and one assist in a game, third two-point game overall, and her first-career powerplay goal.
Sophomore forward Cheyenne Bojeski (Hamilton, Ontario) potted her third goal of the season, first-career powerplay marker, for Syracuse's first goal of the game in the middle of the first period. Junior defenseman Gabrielle Beaudry (Cortland, N.Y.) chimed in for her second straight game with an assist, denoting her first pointstreak of the season. Freshman blueliner Kelly Dimmen (Colorado Springs, Colo.), who scored SU's lone goal on Friday night, tallied her second assist of the season to string together her first pointstreak on the season, as well.
First-year winger Lisa Mullan (Victoria, British Columbia) tacked on her club-leading 10th assist of the season on Bojeski's goal.
Junior goaltender Lucy Schoedel (Ithaca, N.Y.) faced only 25 Robert Morris attempts, stopping 23 of them, in 65:00 minutes of play. Schoedel has accrued 470 total saves on the season with an 88.7 save percentage. Schoedel is allowing 3.82 goals per outing.
Robert Morris' Megan Picinic caught Schoedel off-guard at the 11:36 mark of the first period for the contest's first tally. Picnic convened in the right place at the right time to accept a dish from Kylie Rossler near the left post. Picnic shuffled the disc to the back of the net for the 1-0 edge.
Bojeski answered on the powerplay about two minutes later at 13:39 of the initial stanza. Malcolm hoarded the puck behind the net and waited patiently for the right opportunity to find one of her teammates. Malcolm honed in on Bojeski who cut across the crease and delivered the pass. Bojeski one-timed the puck right in front of the crease over RMU's Brianne McLaughlin's mitt to knot the game at 1-1 in powerplay fashion.
With just 40 seconds to go in that same period, the Orange found itself with a 6-4 skater advantage. Jessica Riley and Rossler were sent off for tripping and hooking, respectively, at 17:41 and 18:45. Syracuse worked the puck around from the point down to the wing a couple times before taking its first rip at the cage. Beaudry wound up and dispensed a precise blast that was obstructed by McLaughlin, but Malcolm took matters into her own hands once she discovered the carom in front of the net. Malcolm sprawled out, whirled around, and sent the puck across the goal line with a nifty backhand as she was falling down to take the upper hand, 2-1.
Kristen Miles undid Malcolm's crafty marker at the 1:16 mark of the second period. Whitney Pappas cranked a shot from the point that was blocked by a pile in front of the net. The puck bounced up and Miles batted the rubber out of mid-air into the net for the game's final goal.
The third period mirrored the score as both teams shot nine aside. In the overtime frame, Syracuse offered up two shots on target while the Colonials had to take more of a defensive stance in the five-minute session due to Jenna Monteleone's obstruction penalty. RMU attempted one shot in overtime, but neither squad could capitalize as SU took its first tie in program, history, 2-2.
Syracuse outshot Robert Morris, 29-25.
The Orange continues the CHA gauntlet when it travels to Niagara University, N.Y. on Saturday, January 17 and Sunday, January 18 for a two-game showdown against the Purple Eagles. The Syracuse – Niagara collision will be the first time these two league members have met. Both games will drop the puck at 2 pm.
