Orange Revved Up for Rematch with Motor City's Wayne State this Weekend

After playing its first 16 regular season games, all in regulation, the Orange has skated to three consecutive draws in as many outings. Back on Jan. 10, Syracuse matched Robert Morris' two goals for its first point in the CHA standings. In its latest trip to first-time opponent Niagara, the Orange put together two 1-1 overtime affairs against the Purple Eagles in Western N.Y. With three points to its name, Syracuse will host the Motor City's Wayne State to initiate a four-game homestand at Tennity Ice Pavilion. Following the two-game sets against the Warriors and then Niagara the next weekend, Syracuse will play only four more regular season games before gearing up for the CHA Tournament from March 5-7.
Motor City Madness…Round 2
After playing Wayne State closely in the Great Lakes State on Nov. 21 and 22 in final scores of 5-3 and 5-2, the Warriors make their first trip to Salt City with an unbeaten streak that spans all the way back to Nov. 28 when Wayne State lost at No. 8 Connecticut, 5-4. Wayne State has won six of its last seven outings and drew even with perennial power house, North Dakota, 3-3 at City Sports Arena. Wayne State sits atop the CHA standings with an unblemished 6-0 record in conference battle and a 15-3-2 overall record. The Warriors offensive lines pack a punch as WSU skates into Tennity with the No. 1 goal scorer per game in the country. Senior forward Melissa Boal, who snuck three goals past the Orange in the first series, leads all NCAA skaters with 1.15 goals per game. Senior forward Sam Poyton is the 14th most efficient goal scorer in the country, accounting for 0.80 goals per game. Freshman netminder Delayne Brian has manned the net for a 9-2 record, surrendering 2.55 goals per game with an 89.0 save percentage.
Three Games … Three Draws
After playing its first 16 regular season games in 60 minutes of regulation, Syracuse has matched its opponents' goal total in the last three affairs. After matching Robert Morris, 2-2, on Jan. 10, Syracuse was pitted in a defensive stronghold at Niagara. Syracuse trailed Niagara by a single point in the CHA standings heading into last weekend's set and did not relinquish that deficit after the trip to The Falls.
You'll Shoot Your Eye Out, Kid
In Syracuse's last four games, the Orange has outshot its competitor in all four outings. In the first tilt of the New Year, Syracuse outgunned Robert Morris 30-25 on Jan. 9 and 29-25 on Jan. 10. In the Niagara series, the Orange limited NU to a season-low 12 shots while SU managed 17 attempts on net on Jan. 17. On Jan. 18, Syracuse rifled 32 shots on cage whereas the Purple Eagles managed only 30 to bring the four-game total to 108-92. The Orange has outshot its opponents eight times this season, including Wayne State on Nov. 21, 29-26.
Gordon Getting It Done
Sophomore forward Rebecca Gordon supplied the Orange with a point in each outing at Niagara this past weekend. Gordon was awarded her fourth assist on linemate Lisa Mullan's powerplay goal on Saturday before scoring her second career goal on Sunday. With the two points, Gordon secured her second two-game pointstreak of the season. The St. Catharines, Ontario native is now tied for seventh on the team with six points (2G, 4A).
Powerplay Players
Freshman center Lisa Mullan scored her second-career powerplay goal on Saturday, third overall, to extend her season point total to 13. With the powerplay tally, Mullan overtook the team lead in powerplay scoring with seven points, overall. In addition to her two extra-man markers, Mullan has supplied five assists on the powerplay. Mullan leads the team with 10 assists. Her 0.53 helpers per game is tied for 11th in the CHA and tied for 75th in the nation.
Marty's Got It Made
Sophomore co-captain Stefanie Marty recorded her eighth assist of the season on Mullan's powerplay goal on Saturday. Marty moved into second place on the team's assist list with the point in addition to second on the powerplay scoring list. Marty has one powerplay goal and five assists with the extra skater. Marty is tied for 19th in the CHA with 0.42 assist per game.
Schoedel the Stopper
Junior netminder Lucy Schoedel made 40 total saves in the Niagara series as her defense stalled the Purple Eagles' offense for only 12 shots on Saturday which is a season low. Schoedel has started in all 19 games this season, logging 1072:00 total minutes. The Ithaca, N.Y. native has stopped 510-of-572 total shots for an 89.2 save percentage which ranks 37th in the nation. She has surrendered 3.47 goals per game, pegging her 11th in the conference and 37th countrywide.
