Orange Once Again Celebrates in Storrs

STORRS, Conn. – The sixth-ranked Syracuse University field hockey squad scored in the 88th minute to defeat No. 7 Connecticut, 3-2, in double overtime this afternoon at the Sherman Complex in Storrs, Conn. SU's 11th consecutive victory improved the Orange record to 14-1 overall and 4-0 in the BIG EAST. Syracuse has two league games remaining and controls its own fate in regards to the regular-season championship. The Huskies moved to 14-2, 3-1.
“It was a great game and both teams played very well,” head coach Ange Bradley said. “I am so proud and our defense was tremendous today. Our backline deserves a lot of the credit.”
UConn took an early 1-0 lead just six minutes into the contest, converting on a penalty corner. Junior forward Shelby Schraden evened the score at 1-1 six minutes later off a shot from the middle of the center circle. Freshman back Amy Kee provided the assist.
Junior forward Lindsey Conrad gave the Orange a 2-1 lead in the 37th minute, using a low left backhander that found the lower right corner of the cage.
Syracuse was a man down and the Huskies took advantage, tying the game at 2-2 with just 13 minutes remaining.
Neither squad could find the back of the cage the rest of regulation or the first overtime period. After serving an eight-minute man down in the first overtime, Kee and sophomore back Martina Loncarica used a give-and-go three minutes into the second overtime to propel SU to the 3-2 win.
Both teams recorded 14 shots and UConn held a slim, 8-7, advantage in penalty corners. There were five green and two yellow cards called.
Freshman goalkeeper Leann Stiver registered five saves for the Orange.
Syracuse returns to action on Friday, October 23 at Villanova at 7 p.m.
