How it Happened
- The opening quarter saw both teams trading penalty corner opportunities, with Liberty earning two corners to Syracuse's none in the first 15 minutes. Liz Stange tested Saint Martin twice in the quarter, but the Liberty goalkeeper turned both shots aside to keep the game scoreless.
- Syracuse broke through in the 19th minute on a penalty corner strike. Pati Strunk inserted to Lana Hamilton, setting up van Kempen's powerful shot for a 1-0 Orange lead. The goal was van Kempen's 16th of the season.
- The Flames answered before halftime when Faust capitalized on a rebound opportunity in the 27th minute. After Eiselin made an initial save on a Josefina Tomasi shot, Faust was perfectly positioned to knock home the loose ball, sending the teams into intermission deadlocked at 1-1.
- Syracuse regained the advantage early in the third quarter when Madden converted a counter-attack chance in the 45th minute. Turner played a long pass that found Madden streaking toward goal, and the freshman finished to put the Orange ahead 2-1.
- Liberty refused to fold, however, mounting sustained pressure in the fourth quarter. After missing a penalty stroke in the 40th minute when Eiselin denied Dara Semmartin's attempt, the Flames pulled their goalkeeper late in the period for an extra attacker. The gamble paid off when Josefina Tomasi scored her second goal of the game in the 59th minute, redirecting a Julieta Tornati cross to level the score at 2-2 and force overtime.
- The first overtime period saw Syracuse generate the better chances, with Turner and Lieke Leeggangers both forcing saves from Saint Martin. Liberty earned a penalty corner opportunity but couldn't convert as the game moved to a second overtime.
- The second extra period produced limited scoring chances before the match moved to a shootout. Syracuse converted on attempts by Danique Schuurmn, Bo Madden, and Taylor Bigbie, while Liberty scored on strokes by Lou Combrinck and Paris-Gail Isaacs. With Syracuse holding a 3-2 advantage after four rounds, Turner stepped up and buried the clinching conversion to send the Orange through to the quarterfinals.
- The Orange return to Bedford Field for a Sunday Matinee against host Princeton, ranked third in the final NFHCA Coaches Poll. The Tigers dispatched Fairfield 3-1 earlier on Friday.
- Game time is set for 1 p.m. on ESPN+ as the Orange and Princeton rematch from a September 12, 2025 game. Syracuse came to Princeton and picked up a 1-0 win thanks to a van Kempen stroke in overtime.
- 'Cuse and Princeton last met in the NCAA Tournament in the opening round of the 2022 edition. Syracuse picked up a 5-2 win over the Tigers in College Park, Maryland.
