
Orange Hosts Niagara in Home Opener

The Syracuse ice hockey team hosts the Niagara Purple Eagles for the home opener on Friday, Nov. 6 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 7 at 2 p.m. at Tennity Ice Pavilion. It also begins conference play for the Orange as it plays its first familiar opponent of the season. Fans can watch Friday's matchup on live streaming video on Orange All Access. Both games will be available via live stats.
The Orange ice hockey team is partnering with Operation Smile all season long as it collects toothbrushes at every home game. Fans who donate will help Operation Smile medical teams restore children's smiles.
Last Time Out
The Orange improved to 3-4-1 on the season after its two-game sweep at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, winning 3-2 and 4-3. Freshmen Jessica Sorensen and Kelsey Welch scored their first collegiate goals against the Engineers. Sorensen scored SU's first goal at the first game and secured the game-winner at game two. Welch notched her first goal in the 4-3 win.
Syracuse-Niagara Series
SU went 2-1-2 against the Purple Eagles last season. It last beat Niagara on Jan. 31, 2009 in a 3-2 win. Graduated senior Nikki Leone, sophomore Janelle Malcolm and junior Julie Rising each contributed goals in the victory. The Orange also faced Niagara in its first postseason game in program history when it lost, 2-3. Sophomore Kylie Klassen and junior Stefanie Marty each recorded goals for the Orange, while senior goaltender Lucy Schoedel had 24 saves.
Scouting the Purple Eagles
Niagara is 3-3-2 after sweeping its two-game series against Quinnipiac, winning 3-2 and 2-1. The Purple Eagles attribute their three losses to St. Cloud State, RPI and New Hampshire. Senior forward Jennifer MacLean leads the team in assists with five, while freshman forward Jenna Hendrikx has a team-high six goals this season. Hendrikx earned CHA Rookie of the Week honors for the second time this season after her two-goal performance at Quinnipiac. Junior goaltender Jenni Bauer has been in net for all eight games this season, earning a goals against average of 2.55 and a .900 saves percentage.
