CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The fifth-ranked Syracuse Orange field hockey team had its 12-game winning streak snapped by No. 10 Boston College on Sunday afternoon at Newton Campus Field, losing to the Eagles, 1-0. Syracuse outshot Boston College, 17-2, but was shutout for the first time since Oct. 18, 2008, a streak of 25 games. The Orange moves to 15-2, while the Eagles improved to 12-4.
“I am disappointed that we were unable to take advantage of our opportunities,” head coach Ange Bradley said. “Boston College had its seniors step-up and make a play when it presented itself. I hope we can respond next week.”
Syracuse dominated the first 35 minutes of the game keeping the ball on the Boston College side of the field for almost the entire first half. The Orange put a plethora of shots the BC goal but Kristine Stigas came up huge for the Eagles registering nine saves in the first half to keep the score at 0-0 heading into halftime.
BC's Chelsey Feole broke the scoreless tie at 47:31, converting one of Boston College's three penalty corners. The Orange held a 10-3 advantage in penalty corners.
Freshman goalkeeper Leann Stiver recorded one save for Syracuse. Stigas made 13 saves for the Eagles.
Junior forward Lindsey Conrad led SU with five shots.
The Orange concludes the regular-season on Halloween when SU hosts Rutgers at 1 p.m. Syracuse will honor senior forward Tracy Deitrick, graduate goalkeeper Ashleigh McGowan and junior back Lena Voelmle before the contest. A win would give the Orange the outright BIG EAST Regular-Season Championship.
