HAMILTON, N.Y. – Four Orange women contributed goals in Syracuse's 5-4 loss to Colgate on Tuesday, November 24. Senior defenseman Brittaney Maschmeyer netted her first Syracuse marker, while juniors Stefanie Marty and Julie Rising, and sophomore Megan Skelly added to the offensive efforts. The Orange is now 6-6-1 on the season, while the Raiders improve to 3-9-3.
The first period featured four goals, including three for Colgate. The Raiders opened up the scoring within the seventh minute of the first period when Krista Dermott found Ali Edell for the first goal. Colgate built on its lead just a minute and a half later when Evan Minnick found the back of the net to give the Raiders the 2-0 advantage.
The Orange responded at the 9:22 mark of the first period, when Marty passed the puck to Maschmeyer, who got it past Raiders' goalie Lisa Plenderleith to narrow the Syracuse deficit, 2-1. However, the Raiders did not let their two-point lead to slip for long, as they scored another goal 10 minutes later when Jenna Klynstra and Jessi Waters connected with Katie Stewart, who further extended the Colgate lead, 3-1.
Despite a score-filled opening period, the second stanza allowed just one Syracuse goal. Skelly found the back of the net for her third goal this season to put the Orange back within one, 3-2, with 14:05 remaining in the period.
SU attempted to catch up to the Raiders, but Jordan Brickner scored jut 16 seconds into the final period to regain the two-point lead in favor of Colgate, 4-2. Syracuse tried to fight its way back into the game when freshman Erin Burns and Maschmeyer dished out assists to Marty when the clock read 7:20, but Colgate's Marissa Dombovy made the score 5-4 with less than three minutes remaining. Rising scored the final SU goal at the 18:47 mark with helpers from sophomores Kelly Dimmen and Kylie Klassen. Senior goaltender Lucy Schoedel was pulled from the net during the last two minutes in SU's final efforts, but the Raiders pulled out the 5-4 victory.
Schoedel turned away 33-of-38 shots, while Plenderleith finished with 20 saves.
The Orange will return home to Tennity Ice Pavilion for a two-game series against Union on Saturday, November 28 at 2 p.m. and Sunday, November 29 at 2 p.m. The event is free to the public.
