SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior assistant captain Stefanie Marty scored two goals and two assists as the Syracuse ice hockey team defeated Princeton, 4-3, on Friday night at Tennity Ice Pavilion. The Orange scored three unanswered goals in just the first meeting between the two schools to improves its record to 10-7-1, while the Tigers are now 7-7-1 on the season.
"The big difference was we had all three lines going in the first 40 minutes," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "It was pretty much Stef Marty, (junior forward) Julie Rising, and (sophomore forward) Megan Skelly carrying us. They really set the tone. The other two lines really picked it up. The defense did a really good job; they fed off that, too. That was a good game. Win, lose, or draw, you come out of that game knowing it was a fun game to play."
The Tigers opened up the scoring in the first five minutes of the game with a goal from Julie Flynn, but the Orange got on the board in the final minute of the first period when freshman forward Isabel Menard found an open Marty in front of the net, who flicked the puck above the head of Cassie Seguin for her first goal of the night.
Princeton answered 6:54 into the second period when Heather Landry's goal gave the Tigers the one-point advantage yet again. Kelly Cooke increased Princeton's lead exactly five minutes later, but Syracuse was undeterred. Marty responded less than two minutes later with her team-leading 11th goal of the season, with an assist from freshman defenseman Jacquie Greco, to tie the game at two.
The Syracuse offense continued clicking as Marty and Skelly teamed up on the assist to Menard, who gave SU its first lead of the game. Marty dished out her second consecutive assist of the night to Rising, who scored with less than 10 minutes remaining. SU outscored the Tigers in the final period, 14-6, before settling with a 4-3 victory.
Senior goaltender Lucy Schoedel turned away 24-of-27 shots, while Seguin had 29 saves on 33 total shots.
The Orange will play its final game of 2009 when it rematches the Tigers on Saturday, December 12 at 4 p.m.
