SYRACUSE, N.Y. – #8/7 Syracuse cruised to a 92-58 victory against Colgate in the 162nd meeting between the two teams on Monday night at the Carrier Dome. The Orange employed a well-balanced offense which had eleven players score, including five different players in double figures.
The win marked Syracuse's 44th consecutive victory against the Raiders, the longest active win streak against a single opponent in Division I. The victory was also the 1000th triumph in head coach Jim Boeheim's basketball career -- combining his records as SU player (55 wins), assistant coach (139)and head coach (806).
The Orange was clicking on all cylinders both offensively and defensively as it shot 57.4 percent from the floor while holding Colgate to 36.4 shooting. Syracuse also held a commanding advantage in all statistical categories, including points off turnovers (27-7), second-chance points (14-4), points in the paint (46-26) and fast-break points (22-7).
Junior Wes Johnson netted 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting and 3-of-4 from long range to lead all scorers. Senior Arinze Onuaku was second on the team with 12 points on 6-of-7 from the floor.
Redshirt freshman Mookie Jones, sophomore Kris Joseph and freshman James Southerland all posted 10 points for the Orange. The 10 points was a career-best for Southerland, who was 4-for-5 from the field and 2-for-3 from three-point range.
Syracuse also controlled the boards, out-rebounding the Raiders, 42-29.
Johnson led the rebounding effort with a game-best nine boards while junior Rick Jackson paired six points with eight rebounds and a game-best four blocked shots.
The Orange played unselfish offense, posting 35 assists, three shy of the school record. Senior guard Andy Rautins and sophomore guard Scoop Jardine combined each dished out eight assists. Johnson and freshman Brandon Triche logged five helpers each, while Triche added nine points.
Syracuse burst onto the court, jumping out to a 15-5 lead in the first 3:30 minutes of play. Johnson prompted the offensive barrage, opening the scoring with back-to-back three pointers.
The Orange used a 12-2 run to build its advantage to 30-10, with 9:01 remaining in the first half. Johnson and Rautins sparked the run as Rautins twice found a high-flying Johnson for a pair of alley-oop plays that brought the Dome crowd to its feet.
The Syracuse offense added a 17-6 run to head into the break with a sizeable, 47-16 lead.
The two teams traded baskets out of the locker room, but Colgate couldn't come within 25 points of the Orange. Syracuse continued to drive through the second half, taking its largest lead of the game, 81-43, on a Kris Joseph jumper with 6:27 remaining in the half before closing out the 92-58 victory.
The victory gave Syracuse a 117-45 advantage in the all-time series with Colgate. The Raiders are SU's most familiar foe, with 162 matchups on the books.
The Orange continues its non-conference schedule as it hosts Maine on Saturday, December 5 at 7 p.m.
