Syracuse is featured twice on ESPN The Magazine's list of the top 100 sports stories of 2009. The list appears in the Dec. 14 issue and includes the men's basketball team's classic six-overtime BIG EAST Tournament victory against Connecticut (No. 29), as well as Kenny Nims' game-tying goal with 4.5 seconds left versus Cornell in the NCAA men's lacrosse national championship game (No. 90).
The BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinal game featuring Syracuse and Connecticut became an instant classic. The game spanned three hours and 46 minutes and the two teams combined to score 244 points, shattering the previous BIG EAST Tournament record for combined points. Syracuse didn't lead in any of the first five overtime periods, but finally jumped in front of the Huskies in the last session and went on to win, 127-117.
The epic clash was nearly decided in regulation, but officials ruled that Eric Devendorf's 3-pointer at the buzzer came just after the final horn sounded, setting the stage for the longest college basketball game of the shot-clock era.
The men's lacrosse team's quest for its second straight championship was all but over with Cornell holding a 9-8 advantage and less than 30 seconds left. However, Nims knocked the ball loose on a Cornell clear and it ended up in the stick of Stephen Keogh who threw a behind-the-back pass to Matt Abbott. As Abbott was knocked to the ground he fed Nims, who tied the game with 4.5 seconds left at 9-9, forcing overtime.
The goal set the stage for Cody Jamieson's championship-clincher with 2:40 to play in OT.
