SYRACUSE, N.Y. – rv/22 Syracuse (10-0) was untouchable in its 72-20 victory against Delaware State (1-10) on Tuesday afternoon at the Carrier Dome. The perfect 10-0 record matches the best season start in program history, the Orange also opened at 10-0 in 1974-75.
Delaware State's 20 points marked the third-fewest allowed in Orange women's basketball history and the lowest point total for an opponent this season.
Freshman center Kayla Alexander led nine different players who scored for Syracuse, including three in double-figures. Alexander matched a game-high 17 points with six rebounds and a pair of blocked shots in a reserve role.
Syracuse dominated the Hornets under the basket, holding a 34-6 advantage in points in the paint and a 49-25 edge in rebounding. The Orange also posted a 15-0 advantage in second-chance points while benefitting from 49 points off the bench.
Sophomore guard Lynnae Lampkins tallied 11 points on 4-of-5 shooting and 3-of-4 from three-point range. Classmate Tyler Ash rounded out the double-digit scorers, matching 10 points with nine boards.
Senior forward Nicole Michael set the tone for the Syracuse defense, corralling a game-high 12 rebounds while adding nine points, a pair of blocked shots, two assists and three steals. Freshman guard Carmen Tyson-Thomas matched eight points with eight rebounds in a reserve role while junior guard Erica Morrow had seven points and a pair of steals.
SU came out strong, opening the first half on a 10-0 run through the first eight minutes of play. Syracuse's 2-3 zone stifled the Hornets, holding them to a 17.4 shooting percentage through the first half while causing four shot clock violations.
Syracuse continued to drive, taking a 21-7 lead with 3:45 remaining. Back-to-back three's by Lampkins and Michael helped the Orange close out the first half on a 7-0 run to take a 28-10 halftime advantage.
The Orange maintained its fire out of the intermission, outscoring DSU, 12-2, through the first four minutes of the second half to increase its lead, 40-12.
SU broke the game open with a 28-0 run, building its lead, 68-15, with 3:39 left to play. Alexander propelled the run with eight points and Ash had six while the SU defense held the Hornets without a basket for 13 minutes in the stretch.
Syracuse returns to the Carrier Dome on Monday, December 28 when it entertains Rider at 7 p.m.
