BALTIMORE, Md. – Five Syracuse players have been named to the 2009 Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List, which was released on Thursday, Feb. 19. Senior Katie Rowan, juniors Christina Dove, Halley Quillinan and Lindsay Rogers and sophomore Liz Hogan are among the 46 women's players, spanning all divisions, named to the list. Syracuse's five selections tied Virginia for the highest number from any school.
Rowan was a finalist for the Tewaaraton Trophy last season when she led the nation in scoring. Syracuse's first two-time first-team All-American, Rowan set a single-season school record with 142 points, becoming the first Orange player to record 100 points in a season. She scored 73 goals and dished out 69 assists, which ties the NCAA single-season record. Rowan led the nation in scoring, points per game (6.76) and assists and ranked second in assists per game (3.29). She earned the BIG EAST Attack Player of the Year and the BIG EAST Championship Most Outstanding Player award. Rowan was a unanimous selection to the All-BIG EAST First Team and earned All-Northeast Region First Team honors. She entered her senior year as Syracuse's career leader in points (284), goals (178) and assists (106).
Dove led the team in goals with a single-season school record 75 last season on her way to earning second-team All-America honors. She also dished out a career-best 25 assists to join Rowan as the only players in school history to score 100 points in a season. Dove ranked fourth in the nation in scoring and ninth in both points (4.76) and goals per game (3.57). She was a unanimous All-BIG EAST First Team selection and earned All-Tournament honors. In addition, Dove was an All-Northeast Region First Team honoree.
Quillinan, one of only two sophomores named to the All-America First Team last season, scored 77 points on 63 goals and 14 assists in 2008, all career highs. She also tallied single-season bests in ground balls (29), draw controls (53) and caused turnovers (28). Her 77 points rank fourth on Syracuse's single-season record list, while her 63 goals are the third-highest single-season total in school history. Quillinan was a unanimous selection to the All-BIG EAST First Team and was named to the All-Northeast Region First Team. In addition, Quillinan earned All-Tournament Team accolades at the NCAA Championship.
Rogers, a second-team All-America selection, became the first member of the Orange to earn the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year award after helping the SU defense hold its opponents to less than 10 goals 14 times last season. A first-team All-BIG EAST honoree, Rogers recorded career highs with 25 ground balls, 34 draw controls and 16 caused turnovers. She was also named to the All-Northeast Region First Team.
Hogan earned All-Northeast Region and All-BIG EAST First Team honors after leading the league and ranking eighth in the nation with a 7.75 goals-against average in 2008. She also earned a spot on the BIG EAST Championship All-Tournament Team, recording 18 saves in two games. Hogan reached double figures in saves in seven games last season, including SU's first-round NCAA Championship game against Towson. Her 11 saves against the Tigers were the most for any goalkeeper in the first round of the 2008 tournament.
The Tewaaraton Trophy has been presented to the nation's Most Outstanding Player each year since 2001. The award will be handed out on May 28 at the ninth annual awards ceremony that will take place at the National Museum of the American Indian.
The third-ranked Orange returns to action on Friday when it plays at No. 17 Stanford at 6 p.m. Eastern time.
