St. John's 63, Syracuse 61
HARTFORD, Conn. -- Senior Chandrea Jones set the SU single-season scoring record after tallying 10 points in a 63-61 loss to St. John's in the opening game of the BIG EAST Championship at the XL Center. She finished the season with 503 points moving teammate Nicole Michael's 501 points during the 2006-07 season into second place.
Junior Juanita Ward led the Orange with 11 points going 5-for-8 from the field in her 23 minutes. Three members of the Orange had nine points apiece, including junior Vionca Murray, sophomore Erica Morrow and freshman Lynnae Lampkins. Jones finished the game with a game-high 15 boards, while Michael finished with 10.
Syracuse had an 11-point advantage, 45-34, after a jumper from Lampkins at the 12:36 mark of the second half, but a 9-2 St. John's run cut the Orange lead to only four almost two minutes later. SU was back up by seven with 9:02 left in the game after a bucket from Michael and a free throw from Jones.
A bucket from Kristin Moore gave St. John's its first lead of the half, but a layup and free throw from Murray gave advantage back to the Orange, 57-56, with 3:15 to play. The Orange edge was shortlived, however, as a trifecta from McManmon and a field goal from Aricia Mitchell gave St. John's a four-point advantage with about a minute to play.
Jones answered for the Orange with four points to tie the game for the eighth time with 16 seconds until the buzzer, but Lindsay Sky popped in a jumper with one second to go to seal the win for the Red Storm.
St. John's controlled much of the flow of the first half of the game after an early 8-0 run gave the Red Storm a 17-9 lead at the 11:55 mark of the first half. Syracuse answered with a 7-0 run of its own, with four points from Lampkins, to bring SU within one, 17-16, at 8:09.
The two teams were evenly matched as St. John's finished the game 28-of-69 (.406) from the field and Syracuse closed out the game having made 25-of-61 (.410). The Orange outrebounded the Red Storm 44-37, but Syracuse turned the ball over 16 times to SJ's nine. The Red Storm outscored the Orange 26-8 off turnovers.
