SYRACUSE – The Syracuse University women's rowing team won the Orange Cup today for only the sixth time in the 30 year history of the cup and the first time since 2005 at the Ten Eyck Boathouse located at Onondaga Lake Outlet in Longbranch Park. The varsity eight captured the Orange Cup with its three-second victory against Northeastern and Pennsylvania. SU finished the 2,000-meter course in 7:03.8. Northeastern was second at 7:06.3 and Pennsylvania was third at 7:08.1. Syracuse also took first in three other races.
“We had a really good start and walked through our competition during the first 500 meters,” said senior stroke of the varsity eight boat Liz Henwood. “They tried to make a move in the middle of the race and we were able to hold them by starting our sprint early. Our race plan was to win and we followed that plan very well.”
The Orange placed second in the second varsity eight with a time of 7:22.6. Pennsylvania won the race with a time of 7:22.6 and Northeastern placed third with a time of 7:25.3.
The varsity four finished third with a time of 8:33.9. Northeastern finished first and Pennsylvania finished second with times of 8:29.0 and 8:30.8, respectively.
Syracuse took first in the novice eight race, finishing in 7:38.2. Pennsylvania and Northeastern followed at 7:56.2 and 8:13.1, respectively.
The second varsity four placed first with a time of 8:40.8. Pennsylvania was second at 9:03.5.
The Orange won the novice four, finishing the last race of the day in 8:37.2. Pennsylvania A was second with a time of 8:50.2 and Pennsylvania was third with a time of 9:04.4.
Syracuse remains at home when it hosts Radcliff and Dartmouth next week at the Ten Eyck Boathouse located at Onondaga Lake Outlet in Longbranch Park. The men's crew will also be racing as the Orange play tribute to Anna Goodale '05, Olympic Gold Medalist, on Saturday, April 18 at 11 a.m.
