SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Junior Eric Cleckner (Camp Hill, Pa.) is the Syracuse University Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week of April 27, 2009.
Cleckner and the rest of the Syracuse track & field team concluded its outdoor slate on Sunday, April 26 at the Cornell Big Red Invitational. He competed in three events, including the javelin toss, pole vault and discus throw. Cleckner finished 11th in both the javelin toss (46.57m) and the pole vault (4.05m). He then followed it up with an 18th place finish in the discus throw (32.59m).
In his junior year, Cleckner's top performances include, winning the high jump (1.84m) at the SU Welcome Back meet and placing third in the decathlon at the Florida State Relays with 6,124 points.
Cleckner, a Communications Design major in the College of Visual and Performing Arts, and the rest of the track & field team now begin preparation for postseason competition beginning with the BIG EAST Outdoor Championship May 1-3 in Villanova, Pa.
Freshman Antonija Bross (Philadelphia, Pa.) is the Syracuse University Female Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the week of April 27, 2009.
Bross helped guide the Orange women's rowing team to a second place finish at the BIG EAST Championship. Syracuse finished with a total of 97 points at the event which was held at the Cooper River Park in Pennsauken, N.J.
The novice eight boat, where Bross sat in the bow, won the Grand Finale with a time of 7:01.713. Team champion Notre Dame finished second with Georgetown, Rutgers, West Virginia and Villanova following in that order. SU's other boats all finished in the top four of their respective races with the varsity four and second varsity four leading the way with second place finishes.
Bross, a health and exercise science major in the College of Education, and the rest of the Syracuse women's rowing team begin preparation for the Eastern Sprints in Camden, N.J. on May 17.
