SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Despite bouts of heavy rain, the Syracuse softball team (29-19) took on the Raiders of Colgate (25-16) Friday afternoon at the SU Softball Stadium. The Orange split the doubleheader with a 6-0 victory in game one and a 5-1 setback in game two.
Senior Lindsay Wasek led the Orange in the two games going a combined 3-for-5 with a home run, while sophomore Hallie Gibbs registered three hits, a double and a home run. In game one, senior Amy Kelley was a perfect 2-for-2 scoring a run and classmate Nicole Miller was 1-for-3 with an RBI-double. Miller also added a double in game two. Freshman Stephanie Watts scored SU's only run in game two and totaled three steals on the day. She now leads the team with 19 stolen bases.
Game One
The Orange took a 2-0 lead early in the game. After Watts and Kelley were both walked by Raider pitcher Lacy Ver Steeg, Miller drilled a double moving Kelley to third and plating Watts for SU's first run of the game. While Kohl was up to bat, Colgate's catcher tried to pick off Kelley who stepped off base, but overthrew third allowing Kelley time to score.
Syracuse made it a 3-0 game in the bottom of the second. With two outs and no one on base, Wasek slammed a home run over the left field wall. It was her third long ball of the year. Watts was up next and reached on a dropped ball by Raider rightfielder Brittany Hanrahan. She stole second, but Kelling flied out to left field to end the inning.
After two-and-a-half scoreless innings, Syracuse tacked on another run in the fifth. With two outs, Gibbs hit her sixth home run of the season with a line drive out to left field.
The Orange effectively put the game away with two more runs in the sixth. Freshman Nicole Lamison, who pinch hit for Saco and was walked, scored the first run of the inning. After pinch hitter Leah Porter powered a double to right field moving Lamison to third, freshman Gaby Torzilli singled to drive in the two runners giving SU a 6-0 lead.
Syracuse secured the shutout in Colgate's final offensive appearance of the game in the seventh. Sophomore relief pitcher Angie Sagnelli struck out Raider Stephanie Hartquist and collected a grounder from Erin Gomez for the second out. Hanrahan then flew out to Wasek in centerfield to end the game.
Game Two
Syracuse scored its only run in the bottom of the first courtesy of Watts. The freshman was walked to start and recorded her third steal of the day to advance to second. After Kelling grounded out, Gibbs wacked a single up the middle to score Watts and put the Orange ahead, 1-0.
Colgate responded immediately in the top of the second. Ashley Rowe led off with a base hit to right centerfield and advanced to third on a double by Gomez. Meg Mylan followed it up with a single only to advance to second on the throw. Rowe scored to tie the game, but Kelley caught Gomez before she could reach home to pick up an out. Despite two more hits, the game remained tied, 1-1, at the end of the inning.
The Raiders took control of the game in the fifth with four runs on four hits. Jennifer Ortega and Calla Yee hit back-to-back singles to put two on base. The squad then took the lead when Ortega scored on a single by Rowe. With runners at the corners, Gomez shot a long ball over the right field wall to produce the final score.
The Orange tallied three hits in the bottom half of the inning and one each in the sixth and seventh, but were unable to challenge the Raiders.
