Softball Welcomes Rutgers on Senior Day

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – On Sunday, May 3, the Syracuse softball team (29-19, 11-9) takes on Rutgers (21-31, 4-16) in a noon doubleheader. It will be SU's final regular-season matchup before the BIG EAST Tournament.
Syracuse is coming off a split with regional foe Colgate on Friday, May 1. The Raiders were a late addition to the regular-season schedule. The Orange managed to shutout Colgate, 6-0, in game one, but the Raiders rallied in game two for a 5-1 victory.
In game one, SU registered eight hits, including doubles from senior Nicole Miller and freshman Leah Porter, and home runs by sophomore Hallie Gibbs and senior Lindsay Wasek. Senior Amy Kelley led the team in hits going 2-for-2 with a run.
Syracuse took an early 1-0 lead in game two, but the Raiders responded with a run of their own in the second inning and four more in the fifth. Three members of the Orange, senior Jamie Kelling, Gibbs and Wasek, went 2-for-3 at the plate. However, freshman Stephanie Watts scored SU's only run after being walked.

Freshman Jenna Caira continues to lead the Orange in the circle. She secured SU's game one victory to improve to 15-9 on the season. Watts and Kelling combine for 37 of the team's 49 steals, while Miller has a team-best 337 putouts.
Scouting Rutgers
Prior to arriving in Syracuse, the Scarlet Knights face Pittsburgh on Saturday afternoon. Rutgers has lost five of its last six conference games with its lone win coming in a 9-1 victory against Seton Hall.
RU concluded its home schedule on Thursday, April 30 with a 4-2 loss to Long Island. Sarah Kalka, who has a team-high eight doubles and four home runs, led the Scarlet Knights against the Blackbirds. She was a perfect 3-for-3 with an RBI.
Other top performers for second year head coach Jay Nelson include, Amanda Shaw and Nicole Lindley. Shaw leads the team in steals with 13 and is tied for second on the team with a .313 batting average. Lindley is 12-12 in the circle and has pitched 135.2 innings.
Syracuse is 14-3-1 overall against Rutgers. SU swept the Scarlet Knights in 2008 in Piscataway, N.J. with two 7-2 triumphs.
What's Next
The Orange has secured a bid to the 2009 BIG EAST Tournament hosted by Louisville May 7-9 in Ulmer Stadium. It is SU's fifth straight appearance in the league tournament and will be its sixth overall since the Orange joined the BIG EAST in 2001.
