Andy Rautins, a returning senior on the Syracuse men's basketball team, had a squad-best 18 points to lead Canada past Mexico, 95-40, in the first round of the FIBA Americas basketball tournament on August 27 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Canada now plays the Virgin Islands on August 28.
Rautins' 18 points came on six 3-pointers. He was six-of-nine from behind the arc.
The 10-team tournament is a qualifier for the 2010 World Championships in Turkey. Canada is coached by Leo Rautins, a former SU standout and the father of Andy.
The United States has already qualified for the 2010 World Championships as the gold-medal winners from the 2008 Olympics.
