SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Junior forward Lindsey Conrad scored with 1:23 remaining in overtime to lift No. 8 Syracuse to a 2-1 victory against No. 9 Old Dominion on Friday afternoon at J.S. Coyne Stadium. With the overtime period winding down, Conrad converted a feed from junior back Maggie Befort, marking her team-leading fifth goal of the season. The game was the third-straight overtime contest for the Orange, which improves to 4-1 on the season while the Lady Monarchs move to 2-3.
Syracuse and Old Dominion played closely through the first half, each registering four shots, before junior Shelby Schraden put the Orange on the board. Schraden redirected a hard hit ball from Amy Kee past ODU goalkeeper Kelly Driscoll for her fourth tally of the season, giving SU a 1-0 advantage at the break.
The back-and-forth play continued into the second half, before Old Dominion's Kathryn Kirk evened the score at the 60:34 minute mark, finding the back of the cage off pass from Loran Hatch.
Freshman Leann Stiver and graduate student Ashleigh McGowan split time in the cage for Syracuse, combining for five saves. Stiver played the first and overtime periods, shutting out Old Dominion to earn her third victory of the season.
Old Dominion outshot the Orange, 10-8 and held a 9-7 advantage in penalty corners, but strong Syracuse defense prevented the Lady Monarchs from converting on any of their corner opportunities.
SU remains home to face No. 7 Michigan State on Sunday, September 13 at 1 p.m at J.S. Coyne Stadium.
