STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Senior running back Delone Carter rushed for 40 yards on 15 carries, giving him 978 career rushing yards, in a 28-7 loss. Carter is 22 yards shy of becoming the 29th Syracuse back to gain more than 1,000 rushing yards. Senior wide receiver Mike Williams extended his streak of consecutive games with a reception to 22. He had five catches for 54 yards in the game.
The Nittany Lions scored a touchdown on their first possession with a 49-yard completion from Daryll Clark to Evan Royster. At the end of the first quarter, the Syracuse defense stopped PSU on the one-yard line, forcing a fumble on fourth-and-one. Safety Mike Holmes recovered the fumble.
Penn State extended its lead, 14-0, on its second drive of the second quarter. Royster rushed 12 yards for his second touchdown of the day, capping a five-play, 35-yard drive.
On Syracuse's next possession sophomore quarterback Ryan Nassib connected with tight end Cody Catalina for a 19-yard completion. It was Nassib's first career pass and completion and Catalina's first collegiate catch. The drive stalled at the Penn State 35-yard line where the Orange lined up for a field goal attempt, but freshman Ryan Lichtenstein punted the ball out of the formation for his first career punt, landing the ball at the PSU 10 yard line.
On the next series, cornerback Kevyn Scott made his first career interception at Syracuse's 31-yard line to give the ball back to the Orange.
The Nittany Lions opened the second half and scored on a 20-yard touchdown pass to Graham Zug, to put PSU up, 21-0.
In the final quarter, the two teams exchanged possessions before Penn State's Nathan Stupar intercepted a Syracuse pass and returned the ball to the SU two-yard line. PSU capitalized on the turnover to give the Nittany Lions the 27-0 advantage midway through the fourth quarter.
Sophomore Mikhail Marinovich set up Syracuse's first score of the game when he recovered a fumble by quarterback Kevin Newsome at the Penn State 30-yard line. Paulus completed a 16-yard touchdown pass to Donte Davis with 4:23 remaining in the game.
Linebacker Derrell Smith led the Orange defense with 10 tackles, including one for a loss of yards, while Holmes and safety Max Suter each had seven tackles.
The Orange will return to the Carrier Dome next Saturday, Sept. 19 to face Northwestern. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the Carrier Dome Box Office or online.
