SYRACUSE, N.Y. -- The Syracuse University ice hockey team battled in the final minutes, but came up short against Quinnipiac, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon. Sophomore forward Lisa Mullan scored the lone Orange goal against the Bobcats, who swept the two-game set against Syracuse. The Orange is now 13-10-1 this season, while Quinnipiac improves to 11-7-6.
The Bobcats were quick to score following the opening face-off, as they found themselves in a scramble in front of senior goaltender Lucy Schoedel. Janine Duffy quickly shot the puck into the lower left corner of the net for the early 1-0 lead. Regan Boulton and Kallie Flor were credited with the assist.
Quinnipiac increased its lead at the 14:43 mark of the third period when Duffy picked up the puck at center ice and sped toward the Syracuse goal. She passed to Kallie Flor, who was situated in the right faceoff circle and fired a shot in the upper right corner of the net.
With time winding down, the Orange pulled Schoedel from goal for a six-on-five advantage. Just seconds after Schoedel was pulled, SU swarmed the net and Mullan scored her eighth goal of the season. Junior Julie Rising and freshman Holly Carrie-Mattimoe added assists on the marker. The Orange battled to tie it up, but could not get a second goal in the net as time expired.
Schoedel finished with 26 saves, while her counterpart, Victoria Vigilanti, had 24.
The Orange returns to Tennity Ice Pavilion to host a two-game conference set against No. 1 Mercyhurst on Friday, January 22 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, January 23 at 2 p.m.
