SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Syracuse University women's ice hockey team (13-12-1, 4-4) will begin its first of a four-game road swing when it travels to College Hockey America foe Wayne State for a pair of conference contests. The Orange will attempt to end its four-game slide when it faces off against the Warriors on Friday, January 29 at 7 p.m. and again on Saturday, January 30 at 2 p.m. The game can be heard live on WSUAthletics.com via Teamline, while live stats will also be available.
Marty Heads to the Olympics
Junior assistant captain Stefanie Marty will play her final games before traveling to Vancouver to compete in the 2010 Winter Games with her native Swiss National Team. Following the WSU series, Marty will travel to Winnipeg on Feb. 1 to participate in pre-camp and two exhibition games before heading to Vancouver on Feb. 9. The Swiss National Team, which Marty has been a member of since 2003-04, will play Sweden on Feb. 13 in the women's preliminary round. Switzerland qualified as a team for the Olympics in April 2008 at the World Championship in Harbin, China, while the team (18 players, 3 goalies) was officially announced on January 23. In her second season with the Orange, Marty is third in points (24) on a team-high tying 12 goals and 12 assists.
Last Time Out
The Orange hosted No. 1 Mercyhurst last weekend, when it was swept with scores 8-1 and 4-3. Marty scored her team-leading 12th goal of the season, while freshman Holly Carrie-Mattimoe extended her point-scoring streak to six games on the assist. On Saturday, Syracuse rallied for a 4-1 deficit at the start of the third period by scoring two unanswered goals to bring the Orange within one in the final minutes. Senior Brittaney Maschmeyer and junior Julie Rising each netted goals for SU in the rally, but their efforts were not enough to overcome the top-ranked Lakers. The 4-3 loss was the smallest margin of victory for Mercyhurst since it shut out Rensselaer, 1-0, on Oct. 16, 2009.
Orange Against the Warriors
Wayne State holds the 5-1 advantage against Syracuse, while also holding the 186-154 edge in shots. In the first meeting, three players scored for the orange, but WSU put up four unanswered points to settle the 5-3 decision. The Orange hosted the Warriors earlier this season, where the two teams split the series. Syracuse earned its first victory against the Warriors on Dec. 5, 2009, with the help of Marty, Rising, and sophomore Lisa Mullan, who all netted goals for SU. Despite being outshot, 29-26, SU held on for the 3-2 victory.
Scouting Wayne State
WSU is 8-11-3 overall and 4-4-0 in the CHA this season after being swept by Quinnipiac for the program's first losses to QU in school history (10-2-1). Sophomore forward Micheline Frappier had an assist Friday and a goal Saturday to extend her point-scoring streak to three games, which matches her career-high. Sophomore goaltender Delayne Brian set career-highs for saves in a game (42 on Friday) and a series (70). Brian has posted a 2.09 goals-against average and a .924 save percentage this year. The Warriors are led by Katrina Protopapas, who has a team-leading 14 points on 11 goals and three assists.
