DETROIT, Mich. – Senior goaltender Lucy Schoedel recorded her third shutout of the season as the Syracuse University women's ice hockey team defeated College Hockey America rival Wayne State, 2-0, on Friday evening at City Sports Center. The win advances the Orange into second place in the CHA standings with a record of 14-12-1 (5-4-0), while the Warriors fall to 8-12-3 (4-5-0).
After a scoreless 20 minutes, the Orange opened up the scoring 17 seconds into the second stanza. Despite being outshot by the Warriors, 14-7, in the second period, junior Stefanie Marty passed through the neutral zone to fellow junior Julie Rising on the left wing. Rising dished out the puck to sophomore Megan Skelly, who fired a wrist shot into the top corner of the net for her seventh marker of the season. It was the second consecutive game Skelly has recorded a goal for the Orange, while Marty's 13th assist on the year ties for second on the team.
In an effort to catch up to SU's 1-0 lead, the Warriors pulled goalie Delayne Brian with 1:05 left on the clock. The 6-on-5 advantage did not hinder the Orange as it netted its second goal of the night nine seconds later when junior Rebecca Gordon dished out her first helper of the season to freshman Isabel Menard to seal the 2-0 victory. Menard's marker gives her a team-leading 31 points this season.
Schoedel turned aside all 27 saves, while Brian saved 27-of-28 shots on goal.
The Orange will conclude its series against Wayne State on Saturday, January 30 at 2 p.m. It will be junior forward Stefanie Marty's final game before competing with her native Swiss National Team and the 2010 Winter Olympics.
