
Morrow and SU Shut Down Cards, 64-58

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Junior guard Erica Morrow regained her form, with 23 points on 61.5 percent (8-13) shooting from the floor, including 71.4 percent (5-7) from behind the 3-point line as the rv/rv Syracuse University women's basketball (16-3, 3-3) snapped its two-game losing streak with a 64-58 victory at Louisville (10-9, 2-4) on Saturday afternoon.
Senior forward Nicole Michael added 15 points as the Orange guaranteed itself its third consecutive winning season. The Orange was 20-of-45 (.444) from the floor, including 8-of-14 (.571) from behind the arc. SU held the Cardinals to just 30.0 percent (21-70) shooting but took 25 more shots than Syracuse.
Assistant coach Rick Moody coached the last 5:30when head coach Quentin Hillsman was taken to the locker room after collapsing on the sideline. After further examination coach Hillsman traveled home with the team.
The Cardinals used an early second-half run to take a 40-39 lead, but an offensive rebound and layup by Morrow gave SU the advantage back, 41-40 at the 15:03 mark of the second half. UofL kept limiting Syracuse's chances and regained the lead, 45-44, with just 11:47 left in the game.
SU's offensive struggles continued, but nine consecutive points by Morrow on three 3-points gave the Orange a cushion, 54-49, at the 7:16 mark. Syracuse increased its margin to 60-51 on an old-fashion 3-point play by freshman center Kayla Alexander with just 4:20 remaining. UofL pulled to within in five, but Syracuse hung on for the victory.
The Orange jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, but six consecutive points by Louisville's Becky Burke closed the gap to 7-6 with 15:51 remaining in the first half. UofL continued its push and opened a four-point margin, but a 12-0 run by Syracuse gave SU a 28-20 with 6:44 left in the half.
The Orange increased its lead to nine off a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Lynnae Lampkins, but Shelby Harper's third 3-point basket of the day put the score at 33-27 with 3:54 remaining in the first stanza. Syracuse's lead grew to 10, but back-to-back baskets by the Cardinals to close the half made the margin six, 37-31.
SU made 52 percent (13-25) of its shots in the first half, including 66.7 percent (4-6) from downtown. Louisville was able to stay close by taking 11 more shots than SU. Morrow led the Orange with 10 points off perfect 4-of-4 shooting from the field, including 2-of-2 from behind the arc.
