ABOUT THE ORANGE
Syracuse extended its current winning streak to seven games with a 73-56 home victory against Georgetown Monday. The second-largest crowd of the season (26,508) was on hand to witness the triumph. The Orange fell behind 14-0 to start the game, but rallied to earn its fifth win against a ranked opponent this season.
The Orange once again employed a balanced offensive attack which had seven different players score, including three in double figures. Senior Andy Rautins tied for team-high scoring honors with 15 points, including nine from the charity stripe. He also contributed six assists and six steals, both team bests. Sophomore Kris Joseph also paced the Orange with 15 points, shooting 5-of-7 from the field and 5-of-6 from the free-throw line. He dished out two assists and made three steals.
20 WINS FOR THE ORANGE
The victory over Georgetown gave the Orange its 20th win of the 2009-10 season. This year marks the 32nd 20-win campaign in head coach Jim Boeheim's 34-year tenure. Boeheim holds the NCAA record for most 20-win seasons among Division I coaches.
This year also marks the third time under Boeheim Syracuse has started 20-1. The Orange previously achieved the feat in 2004-05 and 1979-80.
SUPER SUBS
One of the keys for the Orange against Georgetown was its bench production. Syracuse's reserves outscored the Hoyas' bench players, 24-0, in the contest. Joseph had 15 points off the bench for the Orange and redshirt sophomore Scoop Jardine had nine points. Both players scored nine points in the first half to help the Orange overcome an early 14-point deficit.
Joseph is third on the club in scoring at 10.2 points per contest. He's also averaging 5.1 rebounds per game. Jardine is averaging 8.3 points per game and he is second on the club behind Rautins with 103 assists.
RAUTINS TAKES OVER TEAM FREE THROWS LEAD
Rautins connected on a personal-best 9-of-10 free throws against the Hoyas and raised his season free-throw percentage to 77.8 (35-45), the best mark on the team. He lists third in the conference in free-throw percentage against conference opponents. Rautins is 26-for-29 (.897) from the charity stripe in BIG EAST play.
SCOUTING DEPAUL
The Blue Demons have struggled this season. Overall, they are 8-12 and 1-7 in BIG EAST Conference action. A 7-8 start to the season led to the ouster of head coach Jerry Wainwright on Jan. 11. He was replaced by interim head coach Tracy Webster, who has gone 1-4 in his five games at the helm. Webster's only victory was a 51-50 decision versus Marquette on Jan. 20.
Senior Will Walker leads the Blue Demons in scoring at 16.1 points per game. He also leads the team with 32 steals. Junior center Mac Koshwal is averaging a double-double (14.0 ppg, 10.5 rpg) in eight contests this year. Koshwal has seen limited action this season due to a series of foot injuries.
Junior Mike Stovall (7.1 ppg), sophomore Eric Wallace (6.8 ppg) and sophomore Devin Hill (6.3 ppg) are the Blue Demons' other top scorers. Wallace and Hill are tied for the team lead with 22 blocks each.
THE SERIES
Syracuse has a 6-4 edge in the all-time series with DePaul and has won the last three meetings, including an 85-68 victory at the Carrier Dome last season. However, the Orange has historically struggled in road games against the Blue Demons. DePaul owns a 3-1 mark versus Syracuse when it serves as the home team.
