DETROIT, Mich. – Junior Julie Rising netted two goals as the Syracuse University women's ice hockey team erased a 2-0 deficit and scored three unanswered goals to sweep the Wayne State Warriors on Saturday afternoon at City Sports Center. SU's top forward line consisting of Rising, junior Stefanie Marty and sophomore Megan Skelly accounted for all eight of Syracuse's points as it improved to 15-12-1 (6-4-0), while the Warriors fall to 8-13-3 (4-6-0) on the season.
The Orange played with a short bench due to team illness and only dressed 14 skaters against the Warriors. Despite being outshot 28-8 in the first two periods, SU showed no sign of fatigue in the third and outshot WSU 17-4.
The first period remained scoreless until WSU's Jenaya Townsend scored her first collegiate goal from just inside the blue line with 15 seconds remaining in the period to give the Warriors the early 1-0 advantage.
Wayne State doubled its lead midway through the second period when Lauren Ragen passed to Alyssa Baldin from the right wing and Baldin shot from the slot past senior goaltender Lucy Schoedel.
After being held scoreless the entire game, the third period belonged to the Orange. After being outshot in both periods, SU held the 17-4 advantage in shot attempts in the final stanza. Rising put Syracuse on the board 4:29 into the third period to cut into the WSU lead, 2-1. Marty, who played in her final game before competing in the 2010 Winter Games with her native Swiss National Team, followed suit and scored the equalizer with five minutes remaining. Skelly found an opening against three WSU defensemen and dished out the puck to Marty, who hit a hard wrist shot in the top corner. Rising netted her team-leading 14th goal with less than one minute remaining take to the 3-2 lead and force Wayne State to pull Delayne Brian from net. The 6-on-5 advantage was not enough to allow the Warriors to respond as the Orange held on for the victory.
Schoedel finished with 30 saves, while her counterpart, Delayne Brian, turned aside 22-of-25 shots in a game featuring just four penalties. Syracuse and Wayne State were 0-for-1 and 0-for-3, respectively, on power-plays.
The Orange travels to take on the Purple Eagles of Niagara on Friday, February 5 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, February 6 at 2 p.m.
