
Orange Sweeps Rutgers, Remains Perfect

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Orange tennis earned its third win in as many days, shutting out Rutgers, 7-0, on Sunday morning at the Drumlins Tennis Center. It was the second sweep of the weekend for Syracuse as it improved to 3-0 on the season, including a 2-0 mark in BIG EAST play.
SU made quick work of the Scarlet Knights, earning the doubles in decisive fashion. Sophomore Emily Harman teamed with junior Christina Tan at No. 1, defeating Amy Zhang and Jennifer Holzberg, 8-4. Veteran Chelsea Jones paired with rookie CC Sardinha in the second doubles spot, defeating Katherine Arlak and Christina Tran, 8-2, while junior Simone Kalhorn and senior transfer Eleanor Peters remained undefeated as a tandem, putting away Maryana Mulchutsky and Leonora Statnick, 8-5, in third doubles.
The Orange carried its momentum into singles play, where five different student-athletes maintained their undefeated record on the season. Harman led off at No. 1 singles, defeating Zhang, 6-2, 6-2 and classmate Alessondra Parra earned a thrilling third-set victory against Holzberg at the No. 2 spot, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2. Tan defeated her opponent at similar fashion in No. 3 singles, winning 6-1, 2-6, 10-2 and Peters earned the win against Mulchutsky, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4.
Kalhorn built her singles win streak to 25 matches, dating back to the 2008 spring season, as she defeated Michelle Green, 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5. Sardinha continued to dominate the competition in the No. 6 slot, defeating Slatnick, 6-1, 6-1.
Syracuse puts its perfect record on the line when it heads west to Michigan for a trio of matches against Eastern Michigan, Michigan and Michigan State next weekend beginning Friday, February 5.
