SYRACUSE, N.Y. – An extremely physical ice hockey game between Providence College and Syracuse University ended in a 4-1 Friar victory. Despite holding a slight 32-29 advantage in shots, the Orange could not get the puck past PC goaltender Genevieve Lacasse.
Neither team managed to put the puck in the net in the first 20 minutes of play, but it was Providence who tallied the first goal in the second stanza and soon took a 2-0 lead. Just 2:50 into the third period on a SU power play, senior captain Julie Rising beat a Friar defender and brought the Orange within one goal. Providence registered two more goals in the third period to produce the final score of 4-1.
Rising has proved to be a playmaker, having scored a goal in each of SU's last two games against top-10 teams. Junior Megan Skelly and sophomore Isabel Menard each earned an assist on Rising's score. Menard came close to evening the score in the third period, but her shot fired from the right side bounced off the pipe. She recorded a team high seven shots for the Orange.
Freshman goaltender Kallie Billadeau played tough in net in her third consecutive start recording 25 saves, including 16 stops in the final period. Senior Ashley Cockell blocked a game high four shots to stop the puck from reaching Billadeau.
Up next, the Orange will host Connecticut tomorrow (Oct. 16) at 4 p.m. The Huskies lost to neighboring Colgate University, 5-3, tonight at Starr Rink.
