Menard's Hat Trick Lifts SU Past UConn

SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Sophomore Isabel Menard recorded the first hat trick in Syracuse women's ice hockey history to lead the Orange past Connecticut, 7-1. The win was a total team effort as 12 different players recorded points for SU. Tonight was a game of firsts for many Orange skaters as five different players recorded their first goal or assist of their career. SU's seven goals in the nonconference matchup also ties for second in school history.
Syracuse's rookies proved to be assets to the team once again as four freshman tallied points in the win. Sadie St. Germain scored the first goal of her career and also added two assists. Margot Scharfe tallied one goal and one assists, which were both firsts in her career. Fellow freshmen Cara Johnson and Akane Hosoyamada also registered their first career points. Johnson dished out one helper, while Hosoyamada added one. Goaltender Jenesica Drinkwater earned her second start during her time at SU and turned away 18 shots in the win.
Junior defender Taylor Metcalfe knocked in the first goal of her career in the third period off assists from St. Germain and Scharfe. Senior Julie Rising scored a goal for the third consecutive game in a row on assists from Ashley Cockell and Megan Skelly to put Syracuse on the board first. The Orange has recorded the first goal in four out of its first five games. Sophomore Jessica Sorensen had two assists, while veterans Lisa Mullan and Kelly Dimmen each dished out their first assists of the season.
Syracuse came out strong from the opening faceoff and set the tone for the game. The Orange held a 2-0 advantage after the first period. Connecticut's Taylor Gross scored the Huskies' lone goal on a power play opportunity in the second stanza. SU answered back with three more scores in the second and two in the third to produce the final score of 7-1. SU held a 38-19 advantage in shots and won 38-of-55 faceoffs.
The Orange will embark on its first road trip of the season next week when it travels to Schenectady, N.Y. to play a two-game series against Union. The puck will first drop on Friday, Oct. 21 at 3 p.m. and the two teams will meet again the following day (Oct. 22) at 3 p.m.
