AMHERST, Mass. – The eighth-ranked Syracuse Orange field hockey team was unable to overcome the big-ball attack of the Massachusetts Minutewomen, 2-0, today at Garber Field in Amherst, Mass. The Orange outshot the Minutewomen, 23-11, and held an 11-8 advantage in penalty corners, but could not find the back of the cage. Syracuse moves to 7-4 with the loss, while the Massachusetts improves to 5-6.
Despite outshooting UMass, 7-4, Syracuse found itself trailing, 1-0, at half time as the Minutewomen converted their third penalty corner to give themselves the advantage with 4:41 remaining in the first half. Jaime Bourazeris beat sophomore goalkeeper Leann Stiver low stick side after taking a crossing pass from Nicole Cordero.
It was a similar story in the second half with SU outshooting UMass, 16-7, and the Minutewomen scoring the loan tally. A breakaway goal by Massachusetts' Molly MacDonnell with 17:17 pushed the score to, 2-0. The play was created by a Cordero pass following an Orange penalty corner.
Syracuse's best opportunity came off a penalty stroke by All-American Martina Loncarica with 1:30 remaining. The junior's attempt was kicked aside by Alesha Widdall
Stiver recorded three saves for the Orange. Widdall registered 11 saves for the Minutewomen.
The Orange returns to action on Sunday, October 10 when it travels east on I-90 to face Albany at 2 p.m.
