SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Three of 10/11 Syracuse's veteran players turned in double-figure outings to help the Orange edge William & Mary, 63-60, in game two of the Legends Classic on Sunday. Syracuse improved to 4-0 on the season and William & Mary moved to 0-3.
Junior Kris Joseph paced SU with 18 points and seven rebounds and senior Rick Jackson recorded his third consecutive double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Junior Scoop Jardine tied career-highs in two statistical categories -- nine assists and five steals -- as he piloted SU's offense. He added 11 points.
Joseph jump started a 12-2 Syracuse run, netting the first five points of the game. The Tribe fought back to cut the Orange lead to three, 12-9, with 10:46 to play in the first half. Two consecutive steals by Mookie Jones led to four quick fast break points by Dion Waiters to put SU up, 20-9.
The final stretch of the first half was a three-point contest between the two teams, which ended in favor of the Tribe. Waiters and Jones each hit shots from behind the arc for Syracuse and William & Mary's Quinn McDowell drained three consecutive shots from long range. With 49 seconds remaining in the first half, the Tribe's sixth three-pointer of the afternoon by Matt Rum cut SU's lead to two. Syracuse held a 28-25 advantage at halftime.
The Orange took a nine-point lead to start the second half, but William & Mary clawed back and quickly evened the score. The Tribe knotted the game, 45-45, with 11:15 to play on a second chance shot from Marcus Kitts. A free threw by McDowell gave William & Mary its first lead of the game, 47-46, but a fade-away jumper by Joseph and a fast break dunk by Waiters put SU back on top, 50-47.
The final stretch of the second half featured four lead changes and the game was tied on two occasions. A fast break field goal by Joseph tied the game, 60-60, with 2:13 to play. An off-ball foul by the Tribe put freshman Baye Moussa Keita at the charity stripe where he sank one-of-two shots, to give SU a one point advantage, 61-60.
With SU up, 61-60 with 23 seconds remaining in regulation, the Tribe was forced to foul and send Joseph to the line. He made one out of two shots to give the Orange a two-point lead, 62-60. A William & Mary turnover with 8.5 seconds to play gave Syracuse possession of the ball. Joseph was fouled again and his free throw produced the final score of 63-60.
William & Mary, led by head coach Tony Shaver, was paced by McDowell and Kitts, who netted 16 points apiece.
