ORANGE AMONG RARE COMPANY
Entering this weekend's action, Syracuse is one of 15 schools that are still undefeated this season. Five of the 15 teams are from the BIG EAST Conference, the most of any conference in the nation. In addition to the Orange, Pittsburgh, Connecticut, Cincinnati and Louisville have not lost a game this season.
A LOOK AT THE ORANGE
Syracuse extended its winning streak to nine games with a 72-58 victory against Michigan State in the Jimmy V Classic at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, December 7. Junior Scoop Jardine led all scorers with 19 points, while senior Rick Jackson tied his season high with 17 points to go along with 16 rebounds.
After leading by seven at halftime, Jackson and Kris Joseph teamed for Syracuse's first eight points of the second half as the Orange regained a 12-point advantage, 46-34, at the 17:21 mark. But the Spartans wouldn't go away, putting together a 7-0 scoring run that cut SU's lead to 46-41. Sophomore Brandon Triche halted the run with a basket, but five straight points by Michigan State brought the Spartans to within two at 48-46 with 13:16 remaining. That was as close as Michigan State would get. Syracuse took control of the game with an 8-1 scoring run that increased its lead to 56-47 with 8:58 on the clock. From there it was all Orange as it went on to the 14-point victory.
For Jackson, it was his seventh double-double of the season and 14th of his career. Joseph finished with 14 points, while Triche added nine points.
SCOUTING COLGATE
The Raiders head to the Carrier Dome after their loss to St. Francis (N.Y.) on Tuesday. Colgate is currently 0-7 for the second straight season. The Raiders returned four starters and nine lettermen this season. Last season, Colgate posted a record of 10-19.
Yaw Gyawu is Colgate's leading scorer this season, averaging 13.7 points per game. Gyawu also leads the team on the boards as well with an average of 5.3 rebounds per game. Last season, guard Mitch Rolls was named to the Patriot League All-Rookie Team, leading the Raiders with a team-high 99 assists. This season Rolls is averaging 5.7 points per game and leads the team with 25 assists.
The Raiders are led by head coach Emmett Davis. This is Davis' 13th year at the helm of the Colgate program. He is the school's all-time leader in wins, guiding the Raiders to a record of 158-189 during his tenture. Previous to Colgate, Davis worked as an assistant coach for 12 years at the Naval Academy.
SERIES RECORD
Syracuse owns a 117-45 advantage in the all-time series and has won the last 44 meetings dating back to 1962. The two teams first met in 1902, splitting the two games played that season. The Orange is 73-18 against the Raiders in games contested in Syracuse, including a 92-58 decision last December.
