SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Senior goaltender Lucy Schoedel made 30 saves defending a hot-shooting offensive attack when the Syracuse University ice hockey team lost to Robert Morris, 1-0, on Friday evening at Tennity Ice Pavilion. Schoedel has recorded 30 or more saves in three out of the last four contests for SU. The Orange is now 7-6-0 in CHA play, while the Colonials earned their first league victory as they are 1-9-1 this season.
“We got off to a pretty good start," said head coach Paul Flanagan. "We had some energy, but we didn't sustain anything. They had five or six really good chances when either Lucy made a great save, they hit a post, or they just missed. We were pretty lucky that we were still in it till the end.”
After skating to a scoreless first period which featured an even distribution of shots, 6-6, Robert Morris netted the only goal of the evening when Whitney Pappas shot from behind the blue line and over the left shoulder of Schoedel. Jennifer Kindret was credited with the assist.
The Orange attempted to fight back from the deficit, but couldn't manage control of the puck as it was outshot, 14-4, in the final period. Schoedel was pulled in the final 45 seconds, but the Colonials managed to outlast SU's last-minute efforts.
Robert Morris goaltender Daneca Butterfield finished with 18 saves.
Syracuse and Robert Morris will conclude its series on Saturday, February 13 at 7 p.m. when seniors Gabrielle Beaudry, Brittaney Maschmeyer and Lucy Schoedel are honored on Senior Day.
