SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Three Syracuse seniors came out victorious on Senior Night as the Syracuse University women's ice hockey team defeated Robert Morris, 3-2, on Saturday evening at Tennity Ice Pavilion. The Orange came back from a 2-0 deficit in the third period and scored three unanswered goals to secure the victory. The Orange was led by senior Gabrielle Beaudry, who finished with a team-high three points all on assists. Beaudry joined fellow seniors Brittaney Maschmeyer and Lucy Schoedel, who played their final home game.
The game began in the same fashion as Friday's contest, as it remained scoreless throughout the first period despite the Orange outshooting the Colonials, 11-7.
The second period opened with several scoring opportunities by the Orange that elicited cheers from the crowd, but they were not able to convert. Despite having the power play advantage, the Orange could not crack the Robert Morris penalty kill. SU's best opportunity came as the penalty ran out on a shot by sophomore Kelly Dimmen that went wide, however the momentum shifted to the Colonials 7:23 into the period when Dayna Newsom intercepted a deflection and one-timed it passed Schoedel to put Robert Morris up, 1-0.
Syracuse's hope for a third period comeback took a hit when the Colonials scored just 25 seconds into the period when Stoa put it into the net past Schoedel with assists from Brianna Delaney and Sara O'Malley. Robert Morris continued its attack on the Orange as Schoedel was put to the test. Four minutes into the period, Schoedel made a diving save to her right to keep the Orange in the game. The senior's great save set the stage for an Orange comeback.
Just half a minute after Schoedel's save, freshman Holly Carrie-Mattimoe made a wrap-around that RMU goalie Daneca Butterfield sent back. The rebound was received by freshman #Isabel Menard#, who shot the puck past Butterfield and got the Orange back into the game. Menard's goal was the first of a flurry of three that the Orange scored in one minute and 23 seconds. Junior Julie Rising tied the game up, 2-2, 12 seconds after Menard's goal, while the Orange took the lead one minute and 11 seconds later on a shot from the far end of the faceoff circle by sophomore #Lisa Mullan#. The Orange held on in the final minutes and preserved its 3-2 lead to win the game.
Schoedel finished with 20 saves, while Butterfield had 29.
Syracuse concludes its regular season play when it travels to top-ranked Mercyhurst on Friday, February 26 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, February 27 at 2 p.m.
